It occurred to me that I have not heard of any interesting events going on in L.A. museums. That's why I decided that today, on my day off, I would spend some time researching exhibitions. Here's what I think sounds interesting:
LACMA.org
- Friday Evenings:
Friday Night Jazz starts at 6PM - 8PM, in the BP Grand Entrance area through the month of November. No tickets or reservations are necessary, and it's free. I tried checking this out one time, but I wasn't 21 yet, so I couldn't hang at the bar with everyone else. Now I'm old... not an issue anymore.
-
Latin Sounds: A series of concerts sponsored by kJazz 88.1. Musical influences from all of Latin America. A few of these sound neato. Admission is free.
- Art
Exhibitions: There are two that interest me right now. First, there is one that focuses on classical art from Naples called, Pompeii and the Roman Villa. Then, there is a photography exhibit that seems like it ties in well with the Roman theme, as the photographer recreates scenes from neo-classical paintings.
Getty.edu
I've always wanted to visit the Getty Villa since its reopening, but the museum doesn't hold too many interesting events. In fact, as I look at their calendar, it seems they have no special exhibits held at that location.
The Getty Center, however, has several exhibits being held. Their main focus seems to be on their exhibit:
Cast in Bronze: French Sculpture from Renaissance to Revolution. It runs through September 27, 2009.
This museum is cool. I've actually been here several times for a couple of art lectures, which I love because it is always interesting to hear from the artists' point-of-view. I am definitely interested in their exhibit called,
The Darker Side of Light. It features drawings from the 1850-1900-- an era obsessed with the role light plays in art.
As for their upcoming lectures, there is one that would be cool for anyone interested in photography. The lecture is called,
Aperture Panel: Abstraction in Photography, and it will go down on July 8th at 7PM. These are free, but on a first come, first serve basis.
Other Sites
I looked at MOCA.org, as well, but nothing there really interested me. I was hoping that there would be a cool exhibit at the Pacific Design Center, which is one of their locations... but there was this weird exhibit where there were a bunch of pots on the floor.
Well, I hope I get to visit some of these. I figure this post might be helpful to other people, too.
Peace <3
