Los Angeles, What Do I Do With You?

It occurred to me that I have not heard of any interesting events going on in L.A. museums. That's why I decided that today, on my day off, I would spend some time researching exhibitions. Here's what I think sounds interesting:

LACMA.org
- Friday Evenings: Friday Night Jazz starts at 6PM - 8PM, in the BP Grand Entrance area through the month of November. No tickets or reservations are necessary, and it's free. I tried checking this out one time, but I wasn't 21 yet, so I couldn't hang at the bar with everyone else. Now I'm old... not an issue anymore.
- Latin Sounds: A series of concerts sponsored by kJazz 88.1. Musical influences from all of Latin America. A few of these sound neato. Admission is free.
- Art Exhibitions: There are two that interest me right now. First, there is one that focuses on classical art from Naples called, Pompeii and the Roman Villa. Then, there is a photography exhibit that seems like it ties in well with the Roman theme, as the photographer recreates scenes from neo-classical paintings.

Getty.edu
I've always wanted to visit the Getty Villa since its reopening, but the museum doesn't hold too many interesting events. In fact, as I look at their calendar, it seems they have no special exhibits held at that location.

The Getty Center, however, has several exhibits being held. Their main focus seems to be on their exhibit: Cast in Bronze: French Sculpture from Renaissance to Revolution. It runs through September 27, 2009.

This museum is cool. I've actually been here several times for a couple of art lectures, which I love because it is always interesting to hear from the artists' point-of-view. I am definitely interested in their exhibit called, The Darker Side of Light. It features drawings from the 1850-1900-- an era obsessed with the role light plays in art.

As for their upcoming lectures, there is one that would be cool for anyone interested in photography. The lecture is called, Aperture Panel: Abstraction in Photography, and it will go down on July 8th at 7PM. These are free, but on a first come, first serve basis.

Other Sites
I looked at MOCA.org, as well, but nothing there really interested me. I was hoping that there would be a cool exhibit at the Pacific Design Center, which is one of their locations... but there was this weird exhibit where there were a bunch of pots on the floor.

Well, I hope I get to visit some of these. I figure this post might be helpful to other people, too.

Peace <3

I Cook, Too

If you know me well, then you should know by now that I love Giada De Laurentiis. I watch her show, Everyday Italian, on Food Network all of the time. I love how her dishes are so delicious, yet they are usually really easy to make, as well.

I've had an itch to make some sort of seafood for dinner. So Friday, when I came home and turned on the TV, Everyday Italian was on. Giada was making grilled salmon with lemon, rosemary and capers, and I was stoked. I guess I couldn't contain my excitement because I went to buy the salmon that day-- I needed to make that dish.

I discovered, after devouring my meal, that I am in love with rosemary. It's such a fragrant herb, and I never realized how many dishes I could make involving rosemary. My goal is to make a red onion and rosemary foccacia-- a recipe that I found over the internet last night. Unfortunately, today it's over 100 degrees in the Valley, so this will have to wait until a cooler day when using my oven won't make the house feel like hell.

Comforted

"You know you busted your shit to at least one Michael Jackson song in your bedroom, a club, a parking lot, a high school gymnasium, etc... The first time I ever drunkenly fell off the stage at a club, "Scream" was playing. Yes, I remember that."
- Michael K, D Listed

It's no shock to anyone that I, too, felt devastated upon hearing the news of MJ's death. I did not see that one coming. In order to climb out of the surrealist state I was in, I was flipping through channels on TV to try and find something funny. Then I got one of those texts that was a last minute "wanna go out?" invitation. It was my friend Rachelle, who was feeling "MJ bummed", as she put it. Even though I knew that the night would be non-stop MJ songs, I got ready as fast as I could so we could head out to the Root Down.

Just as I expected, almost the entire set was MJ related. But I have to say, I have never seen everyone in the room groove so hard. I saw so many smiles light up every time a new MJ song would come on. Almost the entire crowd sang along; at one point, it sounded like a choir in there. I cannot deny the amount of fun I had while listening to the DJ play "Off the Wall" and "PYT". It occurred to me that this was the first time I really ever celebrated someone's death.

As Rachelle and I both headed back home, we talked about how much better we felt about the situation. It seems that we did our mourning in that room with hundreds of strangers. I couldn't quite come up with the words for the feeling I had, but Rachelle said it perfectly: "I feel comforted now".
